Towle Merritt's journey in the wine industry began in the fall of 2001 when he took an intern position at Domaine Comte Georges de VogĆ¼Ć© in Chambolle-Musigny, France. Working alongside the renowned winemaker Francois Millet, Towle gained invaluable experience in both the cellar and vineyard. This early immersion in high-quality winemaking laid the foundation for his career, instilling a deep appreciation for the craft and the importance of meticulous management, particularly in relation to terroir.
Trusted, Reliable, and Experienced
With over 25 years of experience in the wine industry, Towle's career is a testament to generational knowledge, innovative leadership, and a commitment to quality and regenerative organic vineyard management. Recently, Towle played a pivotal role in helping Californiaā€™s oldest family-owned winery achieve Regenerative Organic CertificationĀ©, certifying 253 acres of their vineyards. This accomplishment made them only the 16th winery in the world to complete this rigorous certification.
Leadership and Innovation
Towle's career includes over a decade at Walsh Vineyards Management, where he served as Director of Viticulture, General Manager, and Partner. During his tenure, Walsh managed nearly 5,000 acres of vineyards across 170 unique properties. Towle's innovative contributions to vineyard mechanization and digital vineyard technology earned him recognition from Wine Business Monthly as a 'Top 50 Wine Leader' in both 2018 and 2019.
In 2022, Towle partnered with CH Engineering to introduce Steep Slope Harvesters from Peter Hoffmann of Piesport, Germany, to the United States. These advanced harvesters, designed for challenging terrain, represent a significant leap forward in vineyard mechanization. Towle's pioneering efforts continue to set new standards in the industry, demonstrating his commitment to innovation and sustainable solutions.
Napa Organic Farming Company
In 2022, Towle and his wife Darcy founded Napa Organic Farming Company & Napa FLC Farming Company, vineyard management businesses dedicated to organic and sustainable practices. In 2024, Towle committed to working full-time on this venture, which has quickly become known for its exceptional service and commitment to the environment. His leadership has not only strengthened his family legacy but has also made a significant impact on the broader winemaking community.
Education and Qualifications
Towle holds a Bachelor of Science from Cal Poly Humboldt and an MBA from Sonoma State University. He is a licensed California Farm Labor Contractor; he also holds a Qualified Applicators License.Ā His academic background, combined with extensive hands-on experience, has equipped him with the expertise needed to excel in both vineyard management and winemaking.
