What is Regenerative Organic?

Regenerative organic farming contrasts with conventional methods by promoting soil health, biodiversity, and desirable employment, offering a transformative solution for agriculture.

Conventional

Conventional farms rely heavily on synthetic pesticides and fertilizers to control pests, weeds, and to boost crop yields.

Organic

Organic farms rely on natural inputs and compost, avoiding the use of all synthetic chemicals and synthetic fertilizers.

Regenerative Organic

An approach that goes beyond conventional and organic, aiming not only to minimize harm, but to actively improve and regenerate the environment.

Why Achieve Regenerative Organic Farming?

THE GOLD STANDARD IN FARMING

Maintaining soil health through the addition of organic matter,  avoiding synthetic chemicals, and promoting biodiversity, leads to healthier, more vibrant vineyards.  This health directly translates into Napa grapes that more authentically express their terroir - the unique combination of soil, climate, and environment where the vines grow.

Organic and Regenerative farming is not just a practice of cultivating grapes, it’s a holistic approach that impacts every aspect of viticulture and enology.  The emphasis on natural processes, soil health, improving the lives of farmers, and ecosystem balance, inherently improves the quality of the wine.  As such, regenerative wine can be considered a superior product both in terms of physical quality and ethical value.

How Do We Use Regenerative Organic Practices?

This is a holistic approach to rebuilding soil health, enhancing biodiversity, sequestering carbon, and fostering resilient ecosystems using natural biological processes.

Improving Lives

Utilizes M.I.T. wage calculator to ensure fair pay, enhancing the livelihoods of farmers.

Organic Inputs

Natural inputs applied in agriculture to promote soil health and crop productivity.

Composting

The natural process of decomposing organic matter to create nutrient-rich soil amendments for gardening.

Minimal/No Cultivation

Conserves soil structure, retains moisture, and captures carbon for environmental benefits.

Ruminant Grazing

Controlled animal movement restores soil health, enhances biodiversity, and mitigates erosion for land rehabilitation.

Cover Crops

Specialized plants grown between vine rows to enrich soil, suppress weeds, and enhance vineyard biodiversity.

Trusted, Reliable, and Experienced

Towle Merritt’s 25 year journey in the wine industry is a story of generational knowledge, innovative leadership, and a commitment to quality and regenerative organic vineyard management.  Towle recently played a pivotal role in California’s oldest family-owned winery achieving Regenerative Organic Certification©, certifying their 253 acres of vineyards.  This achievement made them only the 16th winery in the world to complete this stringent certification.

Prior to that, Towle was Director of Viticulture, followed by a General Manager/Partner at Walsh Vineyards Management (2006-2019).  At the time, Walsh provided farming services on nearly 5,000 acres of vineyards, involving some 170 unique properties.  In 2022, he and his wife Darcy founded what would become a vineyard management company like no other, the Napa Organic Farming Company. In 2024, Towle began working full time on his new business.  His contributions to the industry have not only advanced the legacy of his family, but have also significantly influenced the wider world of winemaking.
